Sperm concentration test at home is a qualitative colour test for a semen sample that shows whether sperm concentration is below or at least 15 million sperm/ml. The test is intended as a first, indicative check, for example during family planning, and the sample does not need to be sent to a laboratory.
Why choose this sperm concentration test at home?
The test offers a simple and private way to check one factor that can affect male fertility at home.
- 15 million/ml cut-off: shows whether sperm concentration is below or at least this level
- Easy colour comparison: compare the colour of the test area with the reference area
- For home use: no laboratory shipment is required
- No separate reader: the result is assessed visually
- Testing materials included: you only need a timer in addition to the contents of the pack
What does the sperm concentration test measure?
The test assesses sperm concentration in a semen sample in relation to a cut-off of 15 million sperm/ml. It is a qualitative test, so it does not provide an exact sperm count. Instead, it indicates whether the concentration is below or at least the test cut-off.
The result is based on the colour intensity of test area A, which is compared with reference area B according to the instructions for use.
The test does not measure sperm motility, morphology or other characteristics that may be assessed in a full semen analysis. The result should therefore not be interpreted as a complete assessment of male fertility.
Who is the test suitable for and when can it be used?
The test can be used as a first, indicative check when planning a pregnancy, when pregnancy is taking longer than hoped or when you want to get an initial indication of your sperm concentration.
Before collecting the sample, avoid sexual activity and ejaculation for 3–7 days. This helps ensure that the sample is collected under the conditions specified in the instructions.
A more complete fertility assessment may require additional testing by a healthcare professional, as sperm concentration is only one of several factors that affect fertility.
What should you consider before taking the test?
Collect the entire ejaculate directly into the supplied collection cup. Avoid allowing the sample to come into contact with hands, paper or other materials that could contaminate it.
Mix the sample and allow it to liquefy for 15 minutes at room temperature before testing. Do not use a sample that is more than 12 hours old.
The test cassette and other materials should be at approximately 15–30 °C when the test is performed.
How to perform the sperm concentration test at home
- Avoid ejaculation for 3–7 days before sample collection.
- Collect the entire semen sample in the supplied collection cup.
- Mix the sample and allow it to liquefy for 15 minutes at room temperature.
- Add one drop of the sample to well A on the test cassette.
- Add three drops of blue staining solution and wait 1–2 minutes.
- Add two drops of clear washing solution, wait another 1–2 minutes and read the result according to the instructions.
Always follow the instructions for use supplied with the pack.
How do you interpret the result?
If test area A is as dark as or darker than reference area B, the sperm concentration is at least 15 million/ml.
If test area A is lighter than reference area B, the sperm concentration is below 15 million/ml.
If test area A is colourless, the sperm concentration is below 5 million/ml according to the test scale, or sperm may not be detectable in the sample.
A result below 15 million/ml does not by itself mean infertility, and a result of at least 15 million/ml does not confirm normal fertility. The test assesses sperm concentration only.
If the result is unclear or abnormal, the test can be repeated according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid ejaculation for six days before retesting. If the second result is also abnormal, consult a doctor or other healthcare professional for further assessment.

Frequently asked questions about the sperm concentration test at home
What does the sperm concentration test measure?
The test shows whether sperm concentration is below or at least 15 million/ml. It does not provide an exact sperm count and does not assess sperm motility or morphology.
What does a result of at least 15 million/ml mean?
It means that sperm concentration is at or above the test cut-off of 15 million/ml. The result only reflects concentration and does not by itself confirm normal fertility.
What does a result below 15 million/ml mean?
It means that sperm concentration is below the test cut-off. A single result does not mean that you are infertile. If a repeat test is also abnormal, consult a healthcare professional.
How long should I avoid ejaculation before the test?
You should avoid sexual activity and ejaculation for 3–7 days before collecting the sample. Always follow the instructions included with the test.
How quickly do I get the result?
The actual testing stage takes only a few minutes after the semen sample has liquefied. The sample is first left for 15 minutes, after which the staining and washing solutions are added according to the instructions.
Can the test tell me if I am fertile?
No. The test only assesses sperm concentration. Fertility is also affected by factors such as sperm motility, morphology and other reproductive factors.
What should I do if the result is below 15 million/ml?
An abnormal result should first be checked with a repeat test according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If the second result is also abnormal, a more comprehensive semen analysis through a healthcare professional may be appropriate.
