Transferrin and FOB rapid test for faecal specimens
The transferrin and FOB bowel test is a qualitative rapid test for detecting human haemoglobin and transferrin in faeces. It is intended for professional use in the preliminary assessment of gastrointestinal bleeding. The result alone does not diagnose bowel cancer or another disease.
Who is the test intended for?
The test is intended for professional use and has not been tested for home use.
What does the test detect?
The test detects human haemoglobin and transferrin in faeces. Transferrin is more stable than haemoglobin in faeces and may complement the assessment of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Specimen collection and test procedure
- Collect the faecal specimen in a clean, dry container.
- Use the applicator to sample at least three different sites.
- Close the tube and mix the specimen with the extraction buffer as instructed.
- Add the prepared specimen to the test cassette.
When should the result be read?
Read the result at 5 minutes. Do not interpret the result after 10 minutes.
How is the result interpreted?
Control line C must always appear. A test line in the FOB or transferrin region indicates detection of the corresponding marker. The test is invalid if the control line is absent.
Does a positive result establish a disease?
No. A positive result indicates that the marker was detected in the specimen. It must be assessed with symptoms and other investigations and confirmed when necessary.
Limitations and specimen handling
- A fresh specimen gives the best result. According to the IFU, a specimen may be stored for up to three days at 2–8 °C if not tested within six hours.
- Testing should not be performed with visibly bleeding haemorrhoids, blood in urine or during menstruation.
- A negative result does not rule out intermittent or low-level bleeding.
- The test cassette is for single use.
