The Alzheimer’s risk test helps you find out what your genetic risk factors are for Alzheimer’s disease and what lifestyle changes you can make to affect the rate of progression of the disease.
The test analyzes the APOE gene, which is the most well-known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease in old age. Based on preliminary studies, the APOE gene would also indicate a susceptibility to intensive care due to coronavirus infection.
The APOE gene can be inherited in various forms from both parents. One of these forms, APOE-ε4, has been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and occurs in 15% of the Caucasian population. The other two most common, APOE ε2 and APOE ε3, are either neutral or risk-reducing in terms of Alzheimer’s risk.
One ApoE4 allele can triple the risk, and a combination of two E4 alleles can increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease up to 10-15 times.
Lifestyle can influence how genetic risk in the future affects the likelihood of the onset of the disease. Such means include active use of the brain and their protection against accidents, avoiding overweight, not smoking and regular exercise.
