How long does cocaine show up on a drug test?

Learn what affects the cocaine urine detection window, why a negative result can occur and when a screening result needs laboratory confirmation.
How long does cocaine show up on a drug test

Cocaine metabolites are usually visible in a urine immunological drug test about 1–4 days after use. The time is indicative: the amount and frequency of use, the time of sampling, metabolism and the limit value of the test affect whether a rapid test gives a positive screening result.

In the time limit table for drug tests in the Current Care data , the indicative detection time for a urine sample of cocaine is 1–4 days. The rapid drug test does not indicate the exact time of use, the amount used or whether the person is intoxicated at the time of the test.

What does a rapid cocaine test detect?

A rapid urine cocaine test usually detects benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. It compares the concentration with the cutoff specified for that test.

If the concentration of the substance to be identified is at least at the limit value of the test, the screening result may be positive. If the concentration is below the limit value, the result is negative and the substance does not appear in the test in question. Therefore, a negative result does not indicate with certainty that there are no metabolites of cocaine in the sample.

What affects the cocaine detection window?

The approximate detection window depends on:

  • the amount used and frequency of use
  • time since last use
  • individual metabolism
  • sample quality and dilution
  • the cutoff of the test used
  • whether the test panel detects the relevant cocaine metabolite

Long-term use at high doses may prolong detection in urine. An exact time limit cannot be determined for an individual person in advance.

When should you take a cocaine test?

The test is always performed in accordance with the product’s instructions for use and on the type of sample specified in it. A sample taken too early or outside the detection window may give a negative result, even if cocaine has been used.

The result of the rapid test is a preliminary screening result. If a positive result may have medical, legal, work-related or other significant consequences, the result must be confirmed by an appropriate laboratory method.

Which Testerit.fi rapid test is suitable for cocaine screening?

When you want to screen for a cocaine metabolite separately for professional use, Testerit.fi offers an individual cocaine test for a urine sample. Check the product page for the intended use, limit value and manufacturer’s instructions for use.

If you want to screen several groups of substances with the same sample, check out Testerit.fi’s multi-drug screens. Not all multi-drug screens contain the same test panels, so check the product page to make sure that the selected screen contains cocaine, i.e. a COC panel.

See all Testerit.fi’s rapid drug tests and read about the types of drug tests, detection times and interpretation of the results.
