Urinalysis is a useful procedure as an indicator of health or disease, and as such, is a part of routine health screening. Therefore, urine analysis is used as part of a routine health check. The test helps detect and monitor metabolic and other body dysfunctions that have an effect on kidney function, endocrine disorders and urinary tract diseases.

Disorders in the state of health cause changes in the composition of urine even before significant changes in the composition of the blood can be seen.

How do I do a health test on a urine sample?

Take an urine sample in a clean, dry container, mix well and test immediately or within an hour. Do not use preservatives or skin cleansers. Allow the strip, urine specimen, and/or controls to reach room temperature (15-30ºC) prior to testing

1. Remove the strip or the required number of strips from the canister and close the canister immediately. Immerse the test strip in the urine sample so that all the test pads are submerged and lift the strip immediately. Figure 1
2. While removing the strip from the urine, run the edge of the strip against the rim of the urine container to remove excess urine. Hold the strip in a horizontal position and bring the edge of the strip into contact with an absorbent material (e.g. a paper towel) to avoid mixing chemicals from adjacent reagent areas and/or soiling hands with urine Figure 2
3. Compare the reagent areas to the corresponding color blocks on the canister label at the specified times. Hold the strip close to the color blocks and match carefully. Figure 3.
