TSH test for detecting an elevated TSH level
The TSH test is an in vitro diagnostic self-test for adults. It qualitatively detects whether thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in finger-prick whole blood is at least 5 µIU/ml. It does not provide an exact TSH value and cannot by itself diagnose or exclude hypothyroidism.
What does TSH indicate about thyroid function?
TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and stimulates the thyroid to produce thyroid hormones. When thyroid hormone production is insufficient, TSH may rise. An elevated result may therefore indicate primary hypothyroidism. Possible symptoms include tiredness, sensitivity to cold, weight gain, dry skin, brittle hair, constipation and menstrual irregularities.
The test is not intended to assess hyperthyroidism. In central hypothyroidism, TSH may be normal or low, so a negative result does not exclude every thyroid disorder.
When and how is the test performed?
The test may be used at any time of day. According to the instructions, it should not be performed during thyroid hormone treatment. Collect finger-prick blood with the lancet, transfer it with the capillary dropper and add two drops of buffer as instructed. Read the result at 10 minutes and do not interpret it after 20 minutes.
Interpreting the result
What does a positive result mean?
Two lines, C and T, mean that TSH is at least 5 µIU/ml. Consult a doctor; the result may need confirmation with a quantitative laboratory TSH test.
What does a negative result mean?
Only the C line means that TSH is below the test cut-off of 5 µIU/ml. A negative result does not exclude every thyroid disorder. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
When is the result invalid?
If the C line does not appear, the result is invalid. Repeat the procedure with a new cassette and follow the instructions for use.

Storage and freezing risk
Store dry at 2–30 °C in the sealed pouch. Do not freeze. During winter, choose pickup-point parcel delivery to reduce the risk of the liquid buffer freezing in transit.
